Mpowerment Coordinator

Work Objective:

To coordinate an HIV prevention and community

building project for young MSM of Color between

the ages of 14-18. This is a community-based,

peer-run prevention program that is innovative and

evolving and includes a combination of peer-led

small group workshops and peer outreach. The

essence of the program is community mobilization

and empowerment—creating a process by which

young MSM of Color encourage each other to

practice safer sex.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • -participating in the design and preparation of program activities
  • -recruiting young gay and bisexual Men of Color to participate in program activities
  • -recruiting, training and supervising volunteers
  • -participating in the design and preparation of activities to publicize the program within the community
  • -organizing and facilitating project staff meetings
  • -organizing and facilitating community advisory board meetings
  • -keeping records of program activities
  • -managing and maintaining the project space -communicating with community organizations and agencies about program activities
  • -co-facilitating small group safer sex workshops for young gay and bisexual Men of Color
  • -other responsibilities as needed

Skills, knowledge, and abilities necessary:

  • · Have demonstrated leadership qualities
  • · Be able to work collaboratively in a team setting
  • · Show initiative and be able to work independently as necessary
  • · Have excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • · Be knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS prevention with MSM, sexuality and issues to include demonstrated understanding of child and adolescent development.
  • · Be familiar with the local young gay/bisexual men’s community
  • · Be comfortable discussing and facilitating workshops on safe sex
  • · Be able to work effectively and sensitively with homosexually active men of varying socio-cultural backgrounds and levels of homosexual identification
  • · Be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, as necessary

Required Education and Experience:

Must have a minimum of one-year of college in

psychology, social work or a related field and one

year of paid/volunteer experience providing work

with AIDS related or GLBT community issues.
