OUR
MISSION:
1n10 provides a safe environment to LGBTQ youth to promote positive
self acceptance through life enhancing programs. |
| |
|
OUR
VISION:
1n10 provides LGBTQ youth the tools necessary to contribute
as valued members of their communities. |
| |
|
OUR
PURPOSE:
1n10 is a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to serving and assisting lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. We provide
youth with tools to improve self esteem and acceptance of
who they are.
The
youth we work with range in age from 14 to 22. We create a
safe space, mentally and physically, for youth of all socio-economic
and cultural backgrounds. Our weekly discussion groups cover
a wide range of social, educational, health, and community
issues. Youth with particular needs have the option to speak
with peers or volunteers one-on-one, in a supervised setting.
We offer resources for healthy living and making healthy choices,
as well as social networking opportunities appropriate for
developing leadership skills and having fun.
We
are committed to working in collaboration with other valley
and national organizations that help teens including, homeless
shelters, suicide prevention crisis lines (some by teens for
teens), Youth at Risk, Concilio Latino de Salud, Teen Lifeline,
Peer Solutions, Gay/Straight Alliances, GLSEN, Southwest Center
for HIV/AIDS and the Native American Community Health Center.

OUR
HISTORY:
One In Ten, formed by
concerned gay and lesbian adults who saw there was a need
to support youth who were dealing with issues of coming out.
In
the mid-nineties, youth services expanded into two programs:
VOIT for teenagers 14-17 and Horizons for young adults ages
18-22. During this period, our program also received a grant
from Maricopa Integrated Health Services to provide HIV/AIDS
education to valley youth.
In
2002, the name of the organization was changed to 1n10 to
reflect a stronger commitment to valley youth.
In
2003, 1n10 held the first gay prom for high school students
in the valley. Over 120 youth attended. The event was covered
by the Arizona Republic and several local TV stations plus
received national coverage from CNN and NYAC.
In
2004, 1n10 partnered with Concilio Latino de Salud, Valle
de Sol, and Tumbleweed to provide counseling in drug and alcohol
issues and to provide education on HIV/AIDS awareness and
prevention.
In
2006, we collaborated with Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS (formerly
Body Positive) and Native American Community Health Center,
Inc. to secure a 5-year CDC-funded grant to… This funding
allowed us to hire 2 full-time staff, a Program Director and
XXX.
In
2008, 1n10 hired a part-time intern, Jen Workman, who has
since joined the fulltime staff as our Program Coordinator.
Micheal Weakley was promoted to Director of Programs and has
helped transform the program into the success it is today.
The
Fall of 2009 saw the biggest single change in the organization’s
structure when a nationwide search led to the hiring of 1n10’s
first-ever full-time Executive Director, Nick Ray. Nick joined
1n10 after serving as Director of Development at Wingspan,
Southern Arizona’s LGBT Community Center and as a Senior Policy
Analyst with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Nick’s
hiring is the clearest sign of the board’s commitment to moving
1n10 onward and upward.
Today:
1n10 currently serves between 80 and 100 youth at our weekly
drop-in session in Phoenix and 30-50 youth at our weekly drop-in
session in Tempe. 1n10 is currently focused on enhancing and
expanding its youth programs and services. We are working
to increase public awareness of 1n10 and to promote issues
of importance to valley youth. We continue to reach out to
the community for partners to help us in this effort. Please
contact us if you would like to be involved with 1n10 and
our work toward safer environments for LGBTQ youth.

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS:
Answers to some commonly asked questions…….
What does 1n10 do? We provide resources,
support and a safe space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their straight allies,
ages 14-22.
When do you meet? We meet at the Community
Church of Hope (an affirming congregation), every Thursday
night from 7:00pm - 8:30pm. We also meet in Tempe on Tuesday
nights from 7:00pm - 8:30pm at 715 W. 5th Street, Tempe, AZ.
Why is it called
1n10? The name is based on a statistic popular when
the organization was formed that approximately 1 in ten people
identify as LGBTQ.
How is your organization run? 1n10 has a
Board of Directors that oversees the work of the Executive
Director and helps shape the organization on a macro level.
The Executive Director is responsible for all aspects o the
day-to-day management of the agency, including ultimate oversight
of the program staff, volunteers and interns. The Director
of Programs oversees all programs and additional staff, interns
and volunteers. Volunteers are most important for providing
support and mentorship for youth during our group night sessions
and assist the Director with events and programs.
How many volunteers do you have? We currently have 30 volunteers
who attend our weekly programs anywhere from once a month
to every week and also help with all sorts of fundraising
and other special events.
How do I become a volunteer? Our volunteers
must be 25 years of age or older. There is an application
online that can be mailed in, or you can contact the 1n10
Director of Programs to get an application by mail. The application
should include your references and a $15 check payable to
1n10 that covers the cost of running a background check (all
volunteers must go through a background check). Once you send
in your paperwork and check, the Director will begin to process
your paperwork, make reference calls, work with you to visit
a 1n10 group, and set up an interview with you personally.
What kind of things do you do at the weekly programs?
We have a variety of programs about anything from coming out,
current politics, race and sexuality, to problem solving games,
designing t-shirt slogans around topics for prevention, and
even have game nights and parties. There is always the opportunity
to talk to volunteers or peers one-on-one in a supervised
setting if you have a concern or problem, and we have a big
blue drop box if you don’t feel comfortable approaching anyone.
Our Youth Council is AWESOME and makes everyone feel welcome
and will introduce new people to others in the group.
AND…We always have snacks! |
