DIRECTOR:
A. BECK
Beck has served as the Director
of 1n10 since
January 2006.
Beck brings over 10 years of theatrical
experience
working with youth, has served as a co-director for
the Free Arts of Arizona summer theatre camp,
has worked with the local Gay/Straight Alliances,
volunteers with GLSEN Phoenix, and provides
LGBTQ awareness workshops to Phoenix area
high schools and colleges . Beck began working
specifically with the LGBTQ youth community in
Chicago in 2000. Serving as a playwright, director,
and educational theatre artist, she has traveled the
Midwest with LGBTQ youth to educate schools
and community groups on LGBTQ awareness,
bullying and harassment, through theatrical
presentation and facilitated workshops. She has
served as a Gay/Straight Alliance advisor for a
Chicago public high school and remains an Artistic
Associate of About Face Theatre.
Beck is the
1998 recipient of the Kennedy
Center/ACTF Children’s Playwriting award for her
original children’s musical, The Tree to Tarsals,
under contract with Anchorage Press Publishing.
She was awarded the 2006 Arizona State
University Faculty Women’s Association
Distinguished Achievement Award for a Master’s
Candidate, the Herberger College of Fine Arts’
Collegiate Community Partnership Award, and
Echo Magazine’s Ten of Tomorrow – Top Ten
Under 30 years of age in Phoenix, AZ (2005). She
is the founder and director of QSpeak Theatre for
LGBTQ youth and their straight allies, and serves
on the steering committee for the GreenHouse
Project – a transitional housing program and
facility for LGBTQ youth in the Phoenix valley.
Beck holds a BA in
Theatre and English from
Doane College, is a graduate of the Dell’Arte
International School of Physical Theatre and holds
a Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre for Youth and a
Masters Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership and
Management, both from Arizona State University.
